FALL AT TATE

Hyundai Commission: Cecilia Vicuña at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall
October 11, 2022 to April 16, 2023

Chilean artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña will create the next annual Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern. Vicuña (b.1948) is perhaps best known for her radical textile sculptures, combining natural materials and traditional crafts. A prolific multi-disciplinary artist, Vicuña explores the pressing concerns of ecology, community, and social justice. Through her art she pays tribute to her country’s Indigenous history and culture.

Since Tate Modern opened in 2000, the Turbine Hall has hosted some of the world’s most memorable and acclaimed works of contemporary art, reaching an audience of millions each year. The annual Hyundai Commission gives artists an opportunity to create new work for this unique context.

Maria Bartuszová at Tate Modern
September 20, 2022 – April 16, 2023

This autumn Tate Modern will present the UK’s first major exhibition of the work of Maria Bartuszová (1936-1996), an artist who defined the world of sculpture on her own terms using innovative methods in plaster casting. From raindrops and eggs to the human body, Bartuszová took inspiration from organic forms and cycles in the natural world. Spanning the breadth of her remarkable 30-year career, this show will reveal a prolific body of tactile, sensual, and evocative sculptures, shaped by the artist’s personal experiences and deep love of nature. Bringing together over 50 of Bartuszová’s delicate plaster works alongside bronze casts and aluminum reliefs – many of which have never been shown in this country before – it will offer a rare chance to discover how this little-known artist transformed abstract sculpture with works that capture the vitality and precarity of life.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye at Tate Britain
November 24, 2022 – February 26, 2023

Tate Britain will present Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s major survey exhibition Fly In League With The Night. Widely considered to be one of the most important figurative painters working today, Yiadom-Boakye (b.1977) is celebrated for her enigmatic oil paintings of human subjects who are entirely imagined by the artist. This exhibition will bring together over 70 paintings spanning two decades, including works from her graduate exhibition. The most extensive exhibition of the artist’s work to date, Fly In League With The Night was originally presented at Tate Britain in 2020 but was cut short by the national lockdown. Visitors will have a special opportunity to see the exhibition at Tate Britain again, following a critically acclaimed European tour.
